My Favorite Sayings

People say things all the time, original, thoughtful, or funny comments that strike others as something to remember. Quotes. They're not only from famous people, but from people whose words have been made famous, or at least memorable. I have made lists and lists of quotes in my time, but I decided that this time, instead of putting down hundreds of "whatever" quotes, I would place here those which have had the most significant impact on my life (or ones I just can't forget).

"Love finds a way"

"Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of good luck. Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere. Safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless."
  -- read in an e-mail

"There are no limits to what you can achieve except those which you set for yourself."

"Fiction and nonfiction are only different techniques of storytelling. For reasons that I don't fully understand, fiction dances out of me and nonfiction is wrenched out by the aching broken world I wake up to every morning."
  -- Arundhati Roy

"I call this anchoring, establishing a simple, physical, factual connection with present reality. Try it for yourself, right now. Look around you. Listen. Touch your hair, the floor, this page. Whatever happened 10 years ago, whatever happened ten minutes ago, is not your present concern. Neither is what will happen in another ten years, another ten minutes. This moment is all you have to worry about."
-- Martha Beck, Yes, It Was Awful - Now Please Shut Up

"To love someone, you have desire the other person's higher good and help them to become the best they can be. You "do" for them - you make them dinner, you wash their dirty clothes, you kiss their sweet faces when they cry because they skinned their knees. Giving love and letting your loved one know you care, is constant."

"But the most important thing to understand about this most profound verb, love, is that it is something that cannot be given away until it is something that is possessed. You must first own love yourself and it needs to show before you can give it away to so many others. Real love necessitates an investment. It requires nurture, care and most importantly, TIME."

"And here's the kicker. You can't do one lick of loving for anyone else on a continual basis until you love yourself. You will burn out if you do not love yourself first."
